Expectations Charles Dickens Essay Example for Free
Expectations Charles Dickens Essay In the first chapter of Great Expectations Charles Dickens creates a very intense image of the marshes. This is the first place he describes and he makes the marshes sound like a very creepy and bewildering place.à Ours was the marsh country, down by the river, within, as the river wound, twenty miles of the sea.à The words marsh and the river makes the marshes sound like a very damp, muddy and bleak place.à Also in the first chapter Charles Dickens describes the churchyard asà Bleak place overgrown with nettles. Dickens also describes the churchyard s a very Overgrown and bleak place.à A graveyard is supposed to be a happy place that revitalises and refreshes kind, happy memories. I think this implies that death is all around no matter where you look. I think this because everything is overgrown and not looked after and the nettles are killing all of the beautiful plants so death is also involved there as well.à Dickens also says about the marshes in the first chapterà And that the dark flat wilderness beyond the churchyard, intersected with dykes and mounds and gates, with scattered cattle feeding on it, was the marshes: and that the low leaden line beyond was the river: and the distant savage liar from which the wind was rushing was the sea. This quote represents a dark and unforgiving future for Pip and that there is no one out there in the wilderness to care for him. The words leaden line imply a low lead river that looks like it has bars on and to Pip this makes him feel imprisoned. Also the words savage liar represents to Pip that he thinks that there is like a savage monster out there in the sea. Furthermore in chapter one Dickens explains the marshes as a long black, horizontal line and the sky was just a row of long, angry red lines and dense black lines intermixed. The words represent anger and danger and black utility, death and emptiness. Pip again feels like he is a prisoner to the marshes. At the start of the first chapter instead of Pip being one of the main characters he becomes the narrator of the story and starts talking about his family.à So I called myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.à When Pip goes to the churchyard to the graveyard to look at their graves and imagines what his family would of looked like this proves he has a very distinct and creative imagination.à My first fancies regarding what they were like, were unreasonably derived from their tombstones.à Also Pip proves that there was a high rate of infant mortality and he also proves that there was a universal struggle to die. To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged in a neat row beside their grave, and were scared to the memory of five little brothers of mine who gave up trying to get a living exceedingly early in that universal struggle.à Dickens in the first chapter changes from first person the narrator to third person and this s a very unnatural method to use.à And that the small bundle of shivers growing afraid of it all and beginning to cry, was Pip. Also Great Expectations was serialised which means that he novel was brought out in chapters and because the novel was successful people kept buying each chapter each time they were released.à When Pip goes into the churchyard to the graveyard so that he can go and visualise his brothers and his parents he meets a convict. The convict is starving and looking for food and basically anything and so he turns Pip upside town.à The man after looking at me for a moment turned me upside-down.à This is very strong and imaginative and you can clearly imagine it as he turns him upside down literally and metaphorically. After this the convict starts talking to Pip about his appearance. He talks aboutà What fat cheeks you ha got:à After this Pip saysà I believe they were fat, though I was at that time undersized for my years, and not strong.à This gives the impression that Pip has never been fed properly and this make Pip sound innocent and vulnerable.à Later on Pip makes a promise to the convict that he would bring some food and some wittles so that the convict could release himself from the chain around his ankles and the convict threatens Pip to make sure he does this.

The Chosen One :: Enders Game Matrix Movie Essays
The Chosen One Can you imagine if something terrible is going to happen to the human race and there is only one person who could stop it? And that person happens to be you. What would you do? At first, there must be a person who can sense that something terrible is about to happen and knows that there is somebody who is able to stop it. Nobody knows whether he or she was born to be that person that could do something. Something that others arent able to do and he or she is the only person who can do it. NOBODY KNOWS! Basically, that is the story Im going to talk about. It is all about that one chosen person. Its all about the chosen ones belief, faith, and the difference between good and evil. The story comes from the novel "Enders Game" and The Matrix movie. "Enders Game" novel is the winner of both Hugo and Nebula awards by the New York Times best-selling author, Orson Scott Card. And The Matrix movie was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski. "Enders Game" is a novel about a young boy named Ender who was chosen and trained to fight the buggers or aliens in order to save the human race. Neo is the main character in the movie The Matrix. Neo is a single independent man who was also chosen to save the human race, not from the "bugger" but the "matrix". In my point of view, both of these stories are all about the Christian religion. It represents people's beliefs in God. People must believe in God, or in something, and their beliefs will help them go through their life. Their beliefs will bring them happiness; keep them from struggling and divert them from danger. Their beliefs will give them faith, help them follow the right path and stay away from the evils. Both of the stories are science fiction and shows what can lie in the future. Orson Scott Card showed his main point in his novel by its title, "Ender's Game". Ender means the person who will or eventually would end something from happening and Ender's Game is the game of that person. Enders real name is Andrew Wiggin. Andrew is the third child in the family and is known as the THIRD. He knew that he was testing to be the one to fight the aliens after he was born. Rogerian Argument Are The SATs Outdated - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1075 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/02/20 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Rogerian Argument Essay Did you like this example? It is a little known fact that the tax bracket oneââ¬â¢s family falls under can give an idea of what ones SAT score would be, which has some saying that it is biased to the more fortunate. The latter half of a students high school experience is a very stressful time, not only have to juggle numerous after school activities, college tours and applications, but also have to cope with the stress of standardized testing such as the SATs. Some of those stress factors, such as the SATs, are seen outdated and unfair to some students and either need to be wiped away completely or changed drastically in the opposers opinions. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Rogerian Argument: Are The SATs Outdated?" essay for you Create order The fact of the matter is the seemingly never ending debate on whether the SATs are outdated and or unfair, and the question everyone wants to know the answer to is if they should still even be in use. Are the SATs an accurate representation of intellect, or are they an outdated biased way for colleges to be selective? Many feel that the SATs are an accurate representation of intelligence, and give a valuable indicator of a students potential, and college success. Jeffery Penn, a reporter for the New York Academy of Sciences, says ââ¬Å"the standardized college admissions test continues to be a reliable predictor of college success. In addition, for some subjects, SAT scores are statistically more consistent predictors of college freshman grades than high school gradesâ⬠(Penn). What Penn, an advocate for standardized testing is stating is that there is a well founded correlation of college grades and SAT scores, which is a more accurate correlation than that of college grades and high school grades. Jack Buckley, the former commissioner for the national center for education statistics describes these tests as a ââ¬Å"neutral yardstick for measuring student potential and performanceâ⬠(Buckley). One, like Buckley, might say that the SAT score in many cases mirrors first year college perf ormance, and is a valuable tool for colleges to be sure they are getting a spot filled with a valuable scholar. Furthermore, Gaston Caperton, a former governor, and the president of the College Board, states that SATs Help Colleges Make Smarter Admissions Calls,(Caperton). When students are equally as impressive with their GPAs and such, colleges have no other tools but the SAT scores to determine college preparedness, making it an important step in the application process. Overall many feel as if the SATs should be here to stay, because they have an important role in maintaining a level playing field, and are a reliable source on finding out important characteristics of students. While many question the validity of the SATs, and feel it is an obsolete tool, It does seem to be helpful in some aspects of the application process, and has been for 93 years. The colleges have every right to put tough decisions in the hands of the college boards exam because it is very difficult to decide on students who are head to head with activities and grades. The admissions team of many schools believe that it is a key indicator of college readiness, and how students handle stress independently and have the statistics to prove it as well. Therefore the test is seen as the most valuable and reliable tool for those selective schools. Contrary to the beliefs previously discussed, many professionals, parents, and scholars believe that the SATs are not a reliable indicator of college readiness and intellect. First, many believe these tests tend to favor the fortunate, and turn a blind eye to those of whom are poverty stricken. Cooper Aspegren, a news editor for the oracle, says ââ¬Å"socioeconomically disadvantaged test-takers simply cannot afford the benefits of SAT preparation services in the form of private tutors or classes that cost thousands of dollars.â⬠(Aspegren). When the test rolls around, these students are already at a disadvantage before entering the test room. Another reason for people feeling the SATs are obsolete is the fact that it lacks a very important skill set within the actual test, that colleges actually value. The test undisputedly lacks ââ¬Å"outside the box thinkingâ⬠which is a trait colleges seek for enrollment. Randon Busteed, the executive director of Gallup education specif ically states that ââ¬Å"the biggest problem with standardized testing is that it seeks standardized answers. Were not just overinvesting in standardized testing, were actually testing standardizationâ⬠(Busteed). With that being said, the SATs are designed for students to have the same or similar answers. While it is important for there to be a test in place that tests this type of intellect, it is apparent we are missing many other forms of intelligence and competencies. Bad test takers are often those who think outside the box, and find other ways to figure something out. The true claim people like Aspegren are stating, is that the problem solvers are at a disadvantage. One who disputes the fact that the SATs are outdated can not dispute some of the facts. Those who cant afford the test tutoring tend to do worse on their scores than those who can afford the very expensive tutoring, and there is data to prove it. Also, the SATs lack all but standardized intelligence, which is undeniably an important trait but the many others can not be forgotten about. As of right now the SATs have some good qualities, but lack fairness and inclusiveness which makes the test not as great as it could/should be. As of now, the SATs are an unfair test and are not a valid way to measure intelligence. It is reasonable to measure intelligence in a test, but not just standardized intelligence. While it is unlikely that the SATs will be disregarded, the more ideal option would be to fix the test, starting with cost. The college board should offer free tutoring for the test, and financial aid for those who normally wouldnt be able to afford the test. The test should also mix in some outside the box thinking options for those who are creative. The SATs should place higher emphasis on parts that make students stand out as individuals. If the college board were to alter the test, it would be looked at as more of an opportunity for all, rather than a setback for some. With that being said, the test is not too far gone, and should be fixed because it decides the fate of many, so it should at least be fair.

The Importance Of Creating And Managing A Culturally...
Introduction Maya Angelou, a famous African American poet, once said, ââ¬Å"We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their colour,â⬠(Angelou Johnson, 2014). This quote shows how cultural diversity is widely believed to be a benefit to society, but how do these benefits stretch to the context of a business? This review will be looking into literature surrounding the question, what are the key outcomes of creating and managing a culturally diverse working environment? Over 20 years ago, a prediction was made that the demographics of the workforce would start to change significantly and researchers and writers began endorsing the need for organisations to create supportive workplaces where diversity is valued, (Cox, 1994). ââ¬Å"They have argued that diversity is a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes,â⬠(Chrobot-Mason Aramovich, 2013). Chrobot-Mason and Aramovich (2013) also added that the way to ensure positive outcomes from diversity was the effective management of the workplace. This review will be exploring how effective management of a diverse workforce can bring about positive outcomes for employees and whole organisations through increased senses of identity for workers leading to lower turnover rates, and increased innovation within an organisation. Not only that, one would also require some kind of speaker system to play t he music out loud. The concept of DJing is to take two different or the same records and find their break down part and play that over and over to create a beat. The break down part is the part in the song where it is mostly beat focused and the people can really start dancing to the music. This was discovered by a DJ known as DJ Kool Herc. According to an article titled The History of DJing the author states, ââ¬Å"Campbell noticed something peculiar: the dancers grew ecstatic during certain parts of the records--the breaksâ⬠(Adaso). Clive Campbell better known as DJ Kool Herc saw that the dancers only came out to dance during those parts of the song. So since DJ Kool Herc was already a DJ he decided to switch it up and play mostly the breaks. And people enjoyed that, so now at most of the parties, people were dancing most of the time. Furthermore, most of the time the dancing at these parties wasnââ¬â¢t just regular disco dancing they were breakdancing. Organizational Behaviour The Fifth Discipline - Solution is Just a Cl
Questions: 1. What are the main themes of the Fifth Discipline? What are these five disciplines? How you describe and explain these disciplines. 2. How these disciplines relate to each other and why? 3. Why these disciplines are important in establishing a learning organization? 4. Evaluate and discover if that organization is a learning organization or not. If yes why and if not why? Then propose how you can transform this organization to a learning organization.? Answer: 1: Main theme of the book The Fifth Discipline: The main concept of the book involves focusing into solving of group problems through the method of systematic thinking. This would help the organization to become a learning organization. The core capabilities of learning that evolves from the five disciplines are fostering of aspirations, comprehending perplexity and development of a reflective conversation. The central theme of the book helps in suggesting that it is not a wise act for an organization to rely on a single person for learning (Arvinen-Muondo and Perkins 2013). The business can be only successful through the development of members capacity at all the organization levels. A learning organization is the one whose members needs to be open to ideas, able to communicate effectively , understand the organization , form a vision that is shared by the team members and work towards achieving that vision (Senge, 1990). The five disciplines that are referred to as the learning organization are as follows: Personal Mastery Mental Models Building shared vision Team learning System thinking The pictorial representation of the five disciplines is given below: Figure 1 (Source: Wilson and O'Connor 2013) Explanation of the disciplines: Personal Mastery: This discipline helps in deepening and clarifying the personal vision. Individual learning causes organizational learning. Mental Models: This discipline holds the ingrained assumption and generalization that affects the actions and the understanding of the world (Wilson and O'Connor 2013). Building shared vision: This discipline involves unraveling shared pictures of the future that would help in fostering enrolment and genuine thinking. Team learning: This discipline begins with a dialogue conjoined with the systematic form of thinking. The team members have the ability to reject the assumption and form a genuine thinking (Catlin-Legutko and Klingler 2012). System thinking: This discipline is basically an integration of the above four. A type of thinking that has long-term view (Zuber-Skerritt 2014). 2: Relation between the five disciplines: Learning organizations are organization where the learning process is continuous. There is rapid change in the organization through the incorporation of the adaptive and the productive change. There exist learning capacity of individuals but the proper form of structure is not available for expansion. There are some contemporary forms of disciplines based on which the learning organizations are built. These disciplines are interrelated and work in coordination. Individuals are the building blocks to learning process. This would help in guaranteeing organizational learning (Gallistel 2013). The next thing that follows is the mental model. This is the thinking aspect of an individual, the necessary action taken by him and the ability to reflect on certain perspective. The thinking ability of the individual will help in shared vision. When a genuine vision is expressed to the team members then the members can work upon the vision. The vision is spread through the process of reinforcemen t. Individual learning based of certain desires would find a vent through the process of team learning. The concept of team learning centres on shared vision and personal mastery. In an organization, the system of thinking would be established only when individuals in the team are on constant learning phase. 3: The five disciplines are interrelated and help in forming the process of learning in the organization. Personal mastery helps in describing the pro-activeness of individual learning. Individual learning helps serving the purpose of organizational learning. It clarifies and deepens the personal visions. The continuous learning process helps in attaining mastery over their work in the organization. Mental model is the ability of reflecting on actions. The internal pictures of the world can be unearthed through this method. The method of mental learning helps in developing learningful conversation. This helps in exposing creative thinking effectively and this thinking then helps in influencing the team members (Garvin 2013). In order to develop the capacity of work, new skills and development orientation is to be made. The individual learning process will help in sharing of vision. This would enhance clarity, enthusiasm and commitment (Rosenthal 2012). The organization will grow not through single persons learning actions but is dependent upon the learning actions of all the people working in the organization. Individual learning will help in building team learning. Team learning will help in bringing out the objective of learning for each member. Apart from the individuality, the team learns to grow through the visions and prospects about the organization (Gould and Baldwin 2013). The system thinking discipline takes into all the aspects of discipline. Systematic thinking addresses the whole perspective and examines the interrelationship of the parts. This is a long-term phenomenon and so the understanding the loophole gets important. 4: The case study highlights on the aspect of lower morale of the employees in Nestle Corporation. The company has not been able to cater to the needs of the people and so they are not able to provide efficient output (Robbins and Judge 2013). The morale of the employees are down due to a number of reasons. Some of the reasons are the inability to communicate freely with the management and the efficient people not given the type of job for which they are qualified (Hjorne, Aalsvoort and Abreu 2012). The productivity of the company is falling and it is running in losses. The company Nestle lost a large market share to its competitors. The losses were so huge that the company had to sell a part of their internal assets. The company could not understand where it went wrong. The fall in sales and poor customer services have risen due to the number of unhappy employees in the company. There is no guidance by the organization provided to the employees on a weekly or monthly basis. This is the reason why a special team by the company was arranged to note down the feedback of the employees. The human resources department was given the authority to conduct the whole process (Knights and Willmott 2012). There was diverse opinion revealed by the employees but the common factor that was noticed is that there was lack of creativity or learning process within the organization. 5: Application of five discipline of Peter Senge on the case study: The personal mastery discipline when applied does not show a convincing picture. The personal vision that is projected by the employees in Nestle Company does not have any basis. There is no encouragement given to the employees so that they can reach a fruitful vision (Leistner 2012). It is already mentally present in the mind of the manager that the workers lack productivity. Since there is no sharing of vision by the employees, the process of learning does not evolve and the team learning is stagnated. Due to lack of learning at all the levels, the whole system suffers that is reflected through losses that the company accrues. Reason for the company for not being a learning organization: The reasons for Nestle not being a learning organization are: There is no support or encouragement given to the employees for critical thinking and risk taking with respect to new ideas (Marquardt 2013). Nestle does not give rewards to the employees who offer valuable contribution to the company. Transforming of an organization into a learning organization: In order to transform an organization into learning organization there is need for change resistance. This can only be possible when the vision of a senior like the CEO of the company compels the employees have a similar one (Pettinger 2013). The visionary leader when setting up the learning organization should have the awareness that learning should be involved in all levels not only with respect to the management. It is important to build an organizational structure that is facilitative and which helps in removing the organizational boundaries. References: Arvinen-Muondo, R. and Perkins, S.
